Observation of rapid Auger recombination in optically excited semiconducting carbon nanotubes

چکیده
Time-resolved fluorescence measurements of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) reveal rapid electron-hole pair annihilation when multiple electron-hole pairs are present in a nanotube. The process can be understood as Auger recombination with a rate of ,1 ps−1 for just two electron-hole pairs in a 380-nm long SWNT. This efficient nonradiative recombination reflects the strong carrier-carrier interactions in the quasione-dimensional SWNTs. In addition to affecting nanotube fluorescence, Auger recombination imposes limitations on the sustained electron-hole density achievable within a SWNT.

Recent studies of the optical properties of semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotubes suggest that these truly nanometre-scale systems have a promising future in nanophotonics, in addition to their well-known potential in electronics. Semiconducting single-walled nanotubes have a direct, diameter-dependent bandgap and can be excited readily by current injection, which makes them attractive ...

We calculate the radiative lifetime and energy bandstructure of excitons in semiconducting carbon nanotubes within a tight-binding approach including the electron-hole correlations via the Bethe-Salpeter equation. In the limit of rapid interband thermalization, the radiative decay rate is maximized at intermediate temperatures and decreases at low temperature because the lowest-energy excitons ...

Exciton-exciton recombination in isolated semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotubes was studied using femtosecond transient absorption. Under sufficient excitation to saturate the optical absorption, we observed an abrupt transition between reaction- and diffusion-limited kinetics, arising from reactions between incoherent localized excitons with a finite probability of ~0.2 per encounter. ...

We study the excitonic recombination dynamics in an ensemble of (9,4) semiconducting single-wall carbon nanotubes by high-sensitivity time-resolved photoluminescence experiments. Measurements from cryogenic to room temperature allow us to identify two main contributions to the recombination dynamics. The initial fast decay is temperature independent and is attributed to the presence of small re...

Femtosecond mid-infrared spectroscopy was applied to study the vibrational spectra and dynamics in the electronic excited states of semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs). The experiments were performed by exciting SWNTs dispersed individually in polymethylmethacrylate and polyvinyl alcohol polymer films with 40 fs laser pulses at 800 nm, and the resulting responses were monitore...
